Poetry at Stephan's House - Call for submissions

It’s back!

Stephansson House Provincial Historic Site is hosting its 17th annual Poetry at Stephan’s House, on Sunday, July 24th from 1pm-4pm.

Stephansson House celebrates the life and work of Stephan G. Stephansson, who made his home in the Markerville area in 1889. Widely regarded as the greatest Icelandic poet since the Middle Ages, Stephan G. Stephansson is best known for Andvokur, or “Wakeful Nights,” a six-volume set of poetry.

This day is a celebration of poetry, with original poetry readings, live music, and Icelandic treats. It is an opportunity for both published and unpublished poets to engage with a local audience and network with other writers.

This year’s theme is “HOPE,” inspired by the experiences of Stephan, his wife Helga, and the rest of his family as they travelled to Alberta to establish a homestead and raise a family. We welcome submissions of original poems that speak to or evoke the idea of hope.

Submission requirements are as follows:
• Please send submissions to Stephansson.House@gov.ab.ca
• Poems can be written in any style
• 3-5 poems (please note: poets will be given approx. 10 minutes for reading)
• Poems should be submitted as a single PDF or Word document
• A short biography of 150 words or less

The deadline to submit material is July 13th. We look forward to reading all submissions.

Stephansson House Provincial Historic Site is located 7 kilometres North of Markerville off Secondary highways 781 and 592 (20 minutes South of Sylvan Lake).
